WICHITA, KANSAS – David Verne Howey, 85, of Wichita, passed away following Eight months of health challenges.

Life and Education

Born on April 20, 1941, in Topeka, Kansas, to James Howard and Clara Martha Howey, David was a proud graduate of the Hutch High Class of 1960. He went on to earn his degree from Emporia State Teachers College, beginning a lifelong commitment to education and community service.

Career and Service

David's professional life was marked by variety and a passion for helping others. He served as an educator in Great Bend, Derby, Heights, and both West and East Wichita High Schools. Beyond the classroom, he was a grant writer for the Wichita Children and #39; s Home, a real estate agent, and at the SER Corporation, he dedicated his time to teaching low-income individuals how to overcome employment barriers. A staunch advocate for his peers, he was active in the NEA, KNEA, and DNEA, where he spent many hours negotiating for better working conditions and salaries for teachers.

Family

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susan Ford Howey. He was one of ten siblings and is survived by his sister, Barbara Parks of Lawrence, and his brother and sister-in- law, Steve and Marcia Howey of Hutchinson. His memory lives on through his two sons, Jay Ford Howey of Peabody, and Ryan David Howey and wife, Aisha of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, as well as their two grandchildren, Seneyah Miriam Howey and Laith David Howey.

Legacy

In his retirement, David remained active in his community, kept up with the stock market, and stayed connected with his high school classmates. He will be remembered most for his kindness toward everyone he met and his great sense of humor. In his final years, he was a notorious Scrabble player, and his commitment to health was evidenced by his frequent walks in his neighborhood and his presence on the exercise bike.

Services

In accordance with David's wishes, he will be cremated. A family gathering to celebrate His life will be held this summer when his loved ones can be together.
