Dennis "Clay" Slates was born in Wichita, KS to Zella Mae & Lester Slates on March 30, 1944.
"Clay" was a machinist and auto mechanic. He enjoyed spending his days fishing, boating, camping, fixing mechanical things, watching Western TV shows and listening to KFDI/country music. When he wasn't enjoying the outdoors he enjoyed time in the kitchen, cooking his fish, canning pickles and salsa, and cooking a variety of concoctions; some of which were good, and some were not.
Clay loved life and had a keen sense of humor. He enjoyed his grandkids and his great grandkids often buying little treats for them at the holidays. Added to his family were his two dogs; Pugs and Manly which he enjoyed spoiling.
Clay comes from a large family, and was preceded in death by his parents Zella and Lester, his brothers Carl and Dale and sisters; Darlene and Nancy along with his wife Darlene and Clay Jr.
He is survived by his daughters; Robin Pottorff, (Louie Powell) of Wichita, KS; Terrie (Dan) Wilson of Cameron, TX; Valerie Henao of Fairmont, MN; and Jamie Permenter (Kevin) of Harper, KS. He had 26 Grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Harold, Danny and Larry Slates.
Viewing will be held at Baker Funeral Home West 3224 N. Tyler Rd on Wednesday August 14th from 6-8pm. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, August 15th at Greenwood Cemetery, 6231 W. 47th St at 10:00am
