Gilbert James Addison was born February 1, 1939, in Caney, Kansas, to Gilbert L. and Mary Addison and died March 29, 2026, at the age of 87. He was educated in Wichita Public Schools, graduating from East High School and Wichita University (now Wichita State University) in 1960. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science, he taught physical science at Larned High School in Larned, Kansas, and at Circle High School in Towanda, Kansas. He then worked as a chemist at SW Grease and Oil and later as a Process Engineer at the Coleman Company and Cessna Aircraft. He was proud of his work removing radioactive thorium from Coleman Lanterns mantles, receiving a patent for his efforts.

Gilbert enjoyed family and the extended families of friends. He had a lifetime of enjoying the world of science, especially geology and astronomy, and loved collecting fossils. Enjoying jokes and puns, good and bad, was part of enjoying life with friends.

Classical music and opera were also an important part of his life. He played the flute from junior high school through college bands, and in later life, watching movies was increasingly a source of pleasure as he became less mobile.

Gilbert is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; children Kelly (Pat) and Brian; grandchildren Blake and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren, Sophia, Jack, and Avery. Nephews include Aaron, Joshua, David, Jeff, and Stephen. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley.

The family thanks the caring community of Presbyterian Manor, both residents and staff. Gil was the recipient of fine care at St. Francis Hospital MICU, Good Shepherd Hospice, and Manor Nursing Care.

The family suggests memorial gifts be given to the Wichita Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund or any charity of your choosing.
