Obituary

Mary Delores (Dolores) Edwards, 89 passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2025, in Wichita, KS.

Dolores was born in Mountain Home, Arkansas on March 13, 1935, to Ruth Simpson. She had many fond memories of growing up surrounded by her brother, Gerald, and many cousins, aunts, and uncles. She moved to Bois D'Arc, Missouri when she was 12 and her mother married her stepfather, Luther Lanham.  She graduated from Bois D'Arc high school where she lettered in volleyball.

In the 1950s she moved to Wichita, where she raised her 9 children. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years but then ventured out into the work force. She was the manager at Peter Pan Ice Cream Stores for several years and then worked at Name Brand Clothing for 30 years. Dolores spent time with many cherished friends talking on the phone, going out to eat, going to garage sales, and thrifting.

Dolores had a lifelong love of reading, she was always emersed in a good book. She stayed informed on current events up until her death. Dolores was a lifelong feminist, supported LGBTQ+ rights, and worried a lot about the plight of those who were disenfranchised. She always said if she won the lottery, she would donate the money to help the homeless and those with mental illnesses. Dolores loved gardening and especially growing flowers. She enjoyed being in nature and could often be found sitting outside, drinking her morning coffee. She knew the names of most flowers and trees and loved the fall foliage. She was a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and loved to watch their games. She was an animal lover, especially her dogs Princess and Boss. She walked daily into her 80th year.

Dolores attended Central Avenue United Methodist Church for several years. She loved the church because it had a small-town feel. She loved to take part in the potluck lunches. She said there were many good cooks who attended the church.

Dolores is proceeded in death by her mother, Ruth Lanham, stepfather, Luther Lanham, brother, Gerald Lewis, and two sons, Paul D. Yager and Ronald L. Yager.  She is survived by her children, Sharon (Tim) Lewellen, Lorinda (Jerry) Wullschleger, Eldon (Janis) Edwards, Melinda Rea-Holloway, John (Julie Freeman) Edwards, Matthew Edwards and Mark Edwards. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tim Drinnen, Amanda (Mike) Koehn, Allison (Maddy) Carson, Scott Schulte, Kristi (Cort) Giffin, Megan (Jeremy) Cook, Sara Moccardine, Grant Wullschleger, Erin (Trey) Miser, Emily (Spencer) Alefs, Becca (Rhys) Rea-Tucker, Sam Holloway, Isabel (Brendan Kane) Holloway, and Dylan Edwards, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild to be born this spring.
