Russell "Rusty" Lamar Patterson, 78, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain and is now at peace with God.

Rusty was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Clyde and Ruby (Wade) Patterson, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, "Little Rusty" Patterson; his siblings Mary, Pat, and Alan; and his sister-in-law Lorie Patterson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Patterson, and his children: Lori (Rob) Meeks, Heather (Angela) Patterson, Kristy (Troy) Bennington, and Melissa (Lucas) Potts. He also leaves behind grandchildren Dustin Griggs, Jordan Allen, Jacob Kittrell, Drew Bennington, Cole Bennington, Kayte Potts, Aubrey Potts, and Luke Jr. Potts; great-granddaughter Callie Canady; and Danford Wineinger, who held a special place in his heart and whom he loved dearly.

Rusty is also survived by his brothers Robert "Bob" Patterson and wife Kathy, and Timmy Patterson, as well as many extended family members and lifelong friends who will deeply miss him. Rusty spent many of his younger years at the ballfields, where he loved coaching his girls, sharing laughs, and enjoying life to the fullest. He had a larger-than-life presence, a quick sense of humor, and never missed an opportunity to crack a joke or make someone smile. He loved his Wednesday morning breakfasts, treasured time spent with family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. To his grandkids — and especially Danford — he was simply "Papa." He shared a special bond with Danford that brought him endless laughter and joy, and if you asked the rest of the kids and grandkids, they would probably tell you Danford had earned favorite status long ago.

More than anything, Rusty will be remembered for the love he gave, the stories he shared, and the joy he brought into the lives of others. Though he will be greatly missed, his family knows there will continue to be laughter through the memories and stories that keep his spirit alive.

A memorial service honoring Rusty's life will be held on May 29, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Great Plains Church, 2901 W. Taft, Wichita, Kansas 67213. A livestream of the service will also be available.

A second celebration of life will be held in Perry, Georgia on June 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Heather's home, located at 2343A Marshallville Road, Perry, Georgia 31069. All are welcome as we gather to laugh, share stories, and remember the greatness of Rusty and the joy he brought to so many lives.
