Sonja Bagwell, age 61, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, at her home in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on February 26, 1964, to Leonard and Marry (Hull) Newland, the youngest of four children. Sonja graduated from Cherryvale High School with the Class of 1982.

Sonja dedicated her life to education as a paraeducator, touching the lives of thousands of children and forming many lifelong friendships. She was a devoted mother and a loving grandmother who cherished her time with her grandchildren, Peyton and Owen. Any time spent with friends and family brought her joy, laughter, and cherished memories.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Marry Newland, and her son, Shelby McKinney. She is survived by her four children: Joseph (Taylor) Bagwell, Michael Bagwell, Jonathan Bagwell, and Elizabeth (Tyler) Williams; her two grandchildren, Peyton and Owen Williams; and her three older siblings, Larry (Linda) Newland, Margaret (Elizabeth) Newland, and Roddy (Kristi) Newland.

Sonja's warmth, humor, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be deeply missed. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, joy, and a heart that touched everyone she met.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at South Rock Christian Church - Powerhouse. 302 N Georgie Ave, Derby KS, 67037. This will be a come-and-go gathering to share memories and honor Sonja's life with family and friends.
